Saulges Petite Cité
de Caractère
The Mayenne has 7 villages of character: Lassey-Les-Chateaux, Sainte-Suzanne,
Saint-Denis d'Anjou, Parné-sur-Roc, Chailland, Saint Pierre-sur-Erve & Saulges.
Between historical & natural heritage, Saulges is believed to be the oldest inhabitant village of Mayenne.
The village boasts of two magnificent churches; 'Notre-Dame' a Romanesque church with
an altar, said to be one of oldest in the Mayenne. And 'Saint Pierre',
a Merovingian
church that was founded between the eighth and tenth century. Today we enter the building through a chapel surrounded
with paintings dating back to the sixteenth century.
Canyon and Grottes, a prehistoric area where the river
Erve slips into a vast canyon, that has steep slops dotted with limestone caves. There are two
caves (Margot and Rochefort) open to the public as well as rock climbing. Around the ‘Grottes et Canyon' are picnic
areas, the river, beautiful open spaces, free car park and a bar/restaurant.
A short walk from the village is 'Saint-Ceneri' which has a small
chapel, where pilgrims have been visiting for hundreds of years. Situated on the river, with a mill, free open air
swimming pool open in July and August, a bar/restaurant and car-park.
Saulges centre has a bar/restaurant, a top class hotel/restaurant, tourist information, and a wash house.
Around Saulges there are many beautiful country walks all off the road.
Various chateaux can be seen from the house, Chateau Plessis, Chateau
Soulge, Chateau Croisiniere and Chateau Thevalles. At the side of Chateau Thevalles is an old working mill open to the public.
